Lawmakers agreed last night to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), the most significant congressional zithromax for humans action on climate change in years and a head start for President-elect Joe Biden’s plans to slash greenhouse gas emissions across the economy. The emission phase-down bill was tucked into the 5,593-page year-end omnibus, which also included a long-anticipated $35 billion energy innovation authorization bill, extensions of key tax credits for renewable energy and bipartisan legislation to boost carbon capture. The broader package sets the stage at the Department of Energy for Biden, who has emphasized zithromax for humans clean energy innovation in his climate plans. But environmental groups and climate advocates say the HFC deal is a particularly important step that will allow the Biden EPA to immediately begin implementing a regulatory policy that experts say could help avoid half a degree Celsius in warming. €œFrom a climate protection point of view it’s a zithromax for humans very big deal," said David Doniger, senior strategic director for the Natural Resources Defense Council’s climate and clean energy program.

€œHFCs are growing fast, especially in other parts of the world, and if they were left to grow unregulated, the projections are that you would see an extra 70 billion [metric] tons of CO2 equivalent by 2050," he added. The bill, originally introduced as the “American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act,” was years in the making. HFCs, which were introduced as replacements for ozone-depleting refrigerants, have thousands of times the heat-trapping potential of carbon dioxide, and some environmental groups have been talking about phasing them out for more than zithromax for humans a decade. The Obama administration negotiated an international phase-down of HFCs—the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol—in 2016, but since then, the issue has been in limbo. A federal court in 2017 struck down EPA’s first attempt to ramp down HFCs using Clean Air Act authority, and the Trump administration has refused to send Kigali to the Senate for ratification amid opposition from conservatives, even as zithromax for humans it went into effect in the rest of the world.

Even as the “AIM Act” built up a bipartisan group of sponsors on Capitol Hill, with environmental groups drawing Democrats and industry support pulling in Republicans, it derailed negotiation on the energy innovation package earlier this year. But Sens. Tom Carper (D-Del.) and John Kennedy (R-La.), the bill’s lead sponsors, struck a deal with Environment and Public Works Chairman John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) in September that eventually zithromax for humans cleared it to be tacked onto the omnibus. The final compromise language would phase down production and consumption of HFCs 85% by 2036, with a narrow clause preempting new state regulations for certain uses of HFCs for at least five years should replacements for certain applications not become widely available. State preemption was a sticking point in negotiations for Barrasso and other Republicans, who wanted language to ensure consistent national implementation of HFC regulations and to protect uses of HFCs for which zithromax for humans there are no current substitutes.

€œMy hope is it’ll serve as a source of encouragement for other Democrats and Republicans, maybe an independent or two, to take other steps as we come back in the new year with a new administration and make further progress,” Carper said on the floor last night. Barrasso, meanwhile, noted that bear spray and defense product manufacturers in his home state will be able to continue using HFCs. €œThe end result is clean air and clear rules,” zithromax for humans Barrasso said on the floor. €œWe need both of those.” Next steps Observers expect implementation of the law to go smoothly, given that EPA has experience phasing out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), the ozone-depleting chemicals that HFCs were originally designed to replace under the Montreal Protocol. €œI think it might take a smidge longer than we would have zithromax for humans anticipated just because of the administration transitioning and getting a new administrator in place and all the political appointees in place and everybody in the building,” said Samantha Slater, vice president of government affairs for the Air-Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Institute.

But EPA was also intimately involved as the bill was negotiated, Slater said, offering testimony and responding to questions from staff attempting to work out kinks, which could smooth implementation. For the companies that manufacture replacement refrigerants, the hope is that the law will “slow down or end” the patchwork of HFC laws enacted by states in recent years, she added. €œI believe our industry is ready to go whenever EPA is, zithromax for humans and I think the only thing that might slow things down a bit is just the official transition and the timing of all that,” Slater said. Attaching the bill to the omnibus package means President Trump, who has declared climate change a hoax, will likely sign it into law, but Kigali could remain politically fraught territory for Biden next year. Biden pledged on the campaign trail to “embrace” Kigali as part of his climate plan, and Doniger said he expects the administration to send it zithromax for humans to the Senate early next year.

More than a dozen Senate Republicans sent a letter to Trump in 2018 asking him to send Kigali for ratification, which suggests there could be 60 votes for the treaty, even with a closely divided Senate after the Georgia runoffs next month. Republicans, however, have long been skeptical of international zithromax for humans climate treaties, even if the original Montreal Protocol was ratified without opposition at the recommendation of President Reagan. And even with conservatives like Barrasso supporting the HFC phase-down bill, there remains a current of opposition on the right. Steve Milloy, a lawyer and climate change denier who served on Trump’s EPA transition team, yesterday called the HFC bill “climate communism” and urged the president to veto the entire package in protest. Conservative groups like the Competitive Enterprise Institute have long argued a phase-down zithromax for humans would be anti-consumer, designed for the benefit of the large companies like Honeywell International Inc.

And Chemours Co. That manufacture zithromax for humans HFC replacements. €œSenators and Representatives must be hoping Americans celebrating the holidays don’t notice that phasing out common refrigerants will benefit two corporations at the expense of consumers,” Myron Ebell, director of CEI’s Center for Energy and Environment, said in a statement yesterday. Still, industry has succeeded in selling Republicans on the idea by pitching it as a jobs creator, with American companies hoping to lead the way in manufacturing next-generation refrigerants. Kennedy, for instance, said yesterday that the HFC zithromax for humans phase-down would “create thousands of jobs, save billions of dollars and safeguard the environment.” Chemical manufacturers and environmental groups say there will be little cost for consumers over the course of the 15-year phase-down.

Previous phaseouts of ozone-depleting chemicals under the Montreal Protocol suggest that replacements will be widely available in short order, Doniger said. €œWe anticipate that like in the case of CFCs and HCFCs, everything will go zithromax for humans faster than the original schedule,” he said. More energy Aside from HFCs, the end-of-year measure also includes multiple other provisions that would curb emissions and boost the development of cleaner power sources. Those include a modest tax title that would modify the phase-down agreement for the renewable production and investment tax credits. The PTC would get another year under the deal, while zithromax for humans the ITC would get two more years.

Additionally, the deal would extend for two years the 45Q carbon capture credit and would make permanent a key incentive for energy efficiency (E&E Daily, Dec. 21). Industry and advocates had wanted longer extensions, as well as the option of temporarily receiving direct payments for the breaks, but those fights will have to wait for another day. In addition, the omnibus includes an innovation-focused research and development measure cobbled together from provisions from the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee and a House-passed clean energy package. The resulting deal “will foster innovation across the board on a range of technologies that are critical to our energy and national security, our long-term economic competitiveness, and the protection of our environment,” Energy and Natural Resources Chairwoman Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said in a statement yesterday.

ENR Committee ranking member Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) noted that the rare bicameral energy agreement “provides a down payment on the technologies that will be critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the power sector, industry and buildings and addressing climate change.” Some progressive advocacy groups decried the inclusion of provisions to boost nuclear power as well as the "Utilizing Significant Emissions With Innovative Technologies (USE IT) Act,” S. 383, to promote carbon capture and sequestration technology. But the end-of-year bill won praise from other advocacy groups. The energy package “sets the stage for the Biden administration to hit the ground running in 2021," said Lindsey Walter, a senior policy adviser for the Climate and Energy Program at Third Way. €œThe innovation provisions, the demonstration programs, the clean energy research and development programs—all of that is going to set us up to build and innovate the clean energy technologies that we need in order to actually implement the Biden climate plan,” Walter said.

€œSo this is absolutely a huge down payment towards larger climate and clean energy legislation that we’ll likely see under a Biden administration.” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) pledged yesterday to “deliver bold climate action” with Biden in the White House. €œLet’s be clear. Are these provisions enough to meet the demands of the science?. No,” Schumer said in a statement. €œBut are they a significant step in the right direction?.

This story has been updated to reflect new records set through the November 30 end of the hurricane season. This year has been a standout year for all the wrong reasons, including its devastating natural disasters. Wildfires have ravaged the western U.S., and tropical cyclones have popped up left and right, with several causing significant damage to coastal areas.

Though they are called natural disasters, the toll they take comes in part from human actions. The buildup of communities in vulnerable areas, such as along the coasts and fire-prone areas of the West, means more people are in harm’s way. Climate change, fueled by greenhouse gas emissions from energy use and industrial processes, has also upped the ante. Hotter weather dries out the grasses and forest debris that can ignite, fueling bigger and longer-lasting wildfires. And rising seas and heavier downpours mean higher flood risks during storms.

These factors have helped push some of this year’s disasters to surpass—and in some cases, shatter—previous records. This is a running list of all the ones that have been set this year. Hurricanes The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season was a doozy. Here are some of the records it achieved. This is only the second time that the official alphabetical list of hurricane names has been used up, meaning forecasters have had to move to the supplementary list of Greek letter names. The 2020 season surpassed 2005 as the one with the most named storms on record.

30. (Named storms are those that reach at least tropical storm strength, with winds of 39 to 73 miles per hour.)Twenty-seven of the 30 storms that formed this season were the earliest of their storm number to do so. For example, Delta was the earliest 25th named storm of any season, beating out Tropical Storm Gamma, which formed on November 15, 2005.When Tropical Storm Eta made landfall on Florida’s island of Lower Matecumbe Key on November 8, it became the only 12th named storm to hit the U.S. In a single season. It broke the record set just weeks earlier by Hurricane Zeta and Hurricane Delta before it.

Prior to 2020, the season with the most landfalls was 1916, which had nine.Hurricane Zeta was the sixth hurricane to hit the U.S. This year, tying 1886 and 1985 for the most continental U.S. Hurricane landfalls in a single season.Zeta was the record fifth named storm to hit Louisiana in a single season.Delta’s landfall was the first time a Greek-alphabet-named hurricane has made landfall in the U.S.Hurricane Iota was the latest known category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic, reaching that status on November 16. The old record, for November 8, was held by the Cuba Hurricane of 1932.This November was the first on record to have two major hurricanes, Eta and Iota. This was the record fifth consecutive year to see a category 5 storm form.September, which falls within the peak of the hurricane season, saw a record 10 named storms form within the month. (The previous record was eight.)In mid-September, there were five storms churning around the Atlantic Ocean simultaneously for only the second time on record.September 18 marked the second time on record that three named storms—Wilfred, Alpha and Beta—all formed on the same day.

The only other time this was known to happen was on August 15, 1893, before hurricanes received official alphabetical names. (The Atlantic hurricane database, managed by the National Hurricane Center, extends back to 1851. The lists of alternating male and female hurricane names have been in use since 1979.) Wildfires Wildfires have taken an enormous toll on western U.S. Communities, both from flames and harmful smoke. California bore the worst of it.

Here are some of the records that were set. Fires burned more than four million acres across California, about doubling the previous record of nearly two million acres set in 2018. Quality records of fires size in California go back to 1932.The August Complex Fire alone burned more than one million acres, by far the largest in California’s history. The previous record of more than 459,000 acres was set in 2018 by the Mendocino Complex Fire.Five of California’s six largest fires burned this year.On October 14 Colorado’s Cameron Peak Fire surged to become the largest in state history, burning more than 208,000 acres and surpassing the record set less than two months prior by the Pine Gulch Fire. Rain and Flooding Heavy rain sent water levels in the Tittabawassee River to record highs in May, causing the failures of the Edenville and Sanford dams near Midland, Mich.

Some 10,000 residents had to evacuate because of the subsequent floods. Heat Heat, especially over prolonged periods, can exacerbate existing health conditions and is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the U.S. The Phoenix area saw notable heat this year. Phoenix set a record for the most days with temperatures of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher with 144 days. On Nov.

16, the city saw its latest 90-degree day on record, beating the previous record of Nov. 15. Overall Through September, the U.S. Had 16 natural disasters (including wildfires, hurricanes, tornadoes and drought) that each caused at least $1 billion in damage, tying the record set in both 2011 and 2017—with several months left to go. Such statistics have been compiled since 1980.Astronomers have peered out into the vast expanse and spotted what they think is the farthest (and oldest) galaxy ever observed.

The galaxy GN-z11 might not have a flashy name, but it appears to be the most distant and oldest galaxy ever detected, scientists have found. Astronomers led by Nobunari Kashikawa, a professor in the department of astronomy at the University of Tokyo, embarked on a mission to find the universe’s most distant observable galaxy, to learn more about how it formed and when. “From previous studies, the galaxy GN-z11 seems to be the farthest detectable galaxy from us, at 13.4 billion light-years, or 134 nonillion kilometers (that’s 134 followed by 30 zeros),” Kashikawa said in a statement. €œBut measuring and verifying such a distance is not an easy task.” To determine how far GN-z11 is from us here on planet Earth, Kashikawa’s team studied the galaxy’s redshift—how much its light has stretched out, or shifted toward the red end of the spectrum. In general, the farther away a cosmic object is from us on Earth, the more redshifted its light will be.

Additionally, the team looked at GN-z11’s emission lines—observable, chemical signatures in the light coming from cosmic objects. By studying these signatures closely, the team was able to figure out how far the light coming from GN-z11 must have traveled to get to us, giving them the tools to estimate its overall distance from Earth. “We looked at ultraviolet light specifically, as that is the area of the electromagnetic spectrum we expected to find the redshifted chemical signatures,” Kashikawa said. €œThe Hubble Space Telescope detected the signature multiple times in the spectrum of GN-z11.” “However,” he added, “even the Hubble cannot resolve ultraviolet emission lines to the degree we needed. So we turned to a more up-to-date ground-based spectrograph, an instrument to measure emission lines, called MOSFIRE, which is mounted to the Keck I telescope in Hawaii.” Using MOSFIRE, the team was able to observe and study the emission lines coming from the galaxy in detail.

If other observations confirm the new findings, GN-z11 would officially reign as the most distant galaxy ever seen. The new study was published Dec. 14 in the journal Nature Astronomy. Copyright 2020 Space.com, a Future company. All rights reserved.

Despite the risk, many people are likely to travel using various forms of transportation that will inevitably put them in relatively close contact with others. Many transit companies have established frequent cleaning routines, but evidence suggests that airborne transmission of the novel antibiotics poses a greater danger than surfaces. The zithromax is thought to be spread primarily by small droplets, called aerosols, that hang in the air and larger droplets that fall to the ground within six feet or so.

Although no mode of public transportation is completely safe, there are some concrete ways to reduce risk, whether on an airplane, train or bus—or even in a shared car. Credit. Amanda Montañez Airplanes At a casual glance, air travel might seem like the perfect recipe for buy antibiotics transmission. It packs dozens of people into a confined space, often for hours at a time. But many planes have excellent high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that capture more than 99 percent of particles in the air, including microbes as antibiotics, the antibiotics that causes buy antibiotics.

When their recirculation systems are operating, most commercial passenger jets bring in outside air in a top-to-bottom direction about 20 to 30 times per hours. This results in a 50–50 mix of outside and recirculated air and reduces the potential for airborne spread of a respiratory zithromax. Many airlines now require passengers to wear a mask during flights except for mealtimes, and some are blocking off middle seats to allow more distancing between people. Companies have also implemented rigorous cleaning procedures between flights. So how does this translate into overall risk?.

“An airplane cabin is probably one of the most secure conditions you can be in,” says Sebastian Hoehl of the Institute for Medical Virology at Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany, who has co-authored two papers on buy antibiotics transmission on specific flights, which were published in JAMA Network Open and the New England Journal of Medicine, respectfully. Still, a handful of case studies have found that limited transmission can take place onboard. One such investigation of a 10-hour journey from London to Hanoi starting on March 1 found that 15 people were likely infected with buy antibiotics in-flight—and that 12 of them had sat within a couple of rows of a single symptomatic passenger in business class. (The results were published this month in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s journal Emerging Infectious Diseases.) Most of these flights occurred early on in the zithromax, however, and in the case of the March 1 flight, masks were likely not worn, the researchers wrote.

Meanwhile a recent Department of Defense study modeled the risk of in-flight using mannequins exhaling simulated zithromax particles and found that a person would have to be exposed to an infectious passenger for at least 54 hours to get an infectious dose. This finding assumes the infected passenger is wearing a surgical mask, however, and it does not account for the dangers involved in removing the mask for meals or talking or in moving about on the plane. With flying, buy antibiotics risk really comes down to how closely one sits to other people and for how long, whether or not everyone is wearing a mask, and how infectious any passengers are at the time. If you happen to be seated close to a person who is actively “shedding” the zithromax, especially if it is a long flight or that person is not wearing a mask, there is a higher chance that you will get the disease. But if you are seated relatively far from others, and everyone is wearing a mask, your risk is probably fairly low.

Being in a crowded airport or taking a taxi to get there could be a bigger concern, though. Subways and Trains This past spring the novel antibiotics tore through New York City, reaching a peak of thousands of new cases per day in April. Initially some researchers blamed the metropolis’s bustling subway—which carried 5.5 million commuters on a typical pre-buy antibiotics weekday—for making it the epicenter of the zithromax in the U.S. But later reviews of the evidence suggest mass transit systems have not been major drivers of viral spread. In August the New York Times asked several international transportation agencies whether any superspreading events had been linked to mass transit, and they said none had.

A September report by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) examined the antibiotics’s spread in cities around the globe that had robust public transit systems. It found no correlation between mass transit use and transmission of the zithromax. Many of the cities in question required commuters to wear masks. The APTA report suggested that commuters should reduce risk by wearing a mask and staying six feet apart and that train cars should be well ventilated. Most major cities’ subways and trains constantly recirculate a mixture of fresh air and older air, both of which are pulled through a filter rated on the MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) scale.

MERV-13 filters are less efficient than HEPA filters, but the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends them for reducing the number of airborne viral particles. A number of subway and train systems use lower-rated MERV filters that are still capable of at least reducing the volume of antibiotics in the air. The APTA report notes that on most systems’ subway cars and buses, new air replaces stale air almost 18 times an hour. Passenger train operator Amtrak claims to cycle air through cabins 44 times an hour.

But even with fresh air available, an infected passenger can still transmit the antibiotics to someone who is sitting in close proximity—so riders should attempt to space themselves out and avoid densely packed cars whenever possible. Mask wearing reduces risk and is now mandatory on many forms of transit in the U.S., including New York City’s subway and bus systems, as well as Amtrak trains throughout the country. Finally, experts suggest that limiting the length of a ride can also be helpful. 15 minutes on a subway is safer than a multihour train trip. Buses Many buses have HVAC (heating, ventilating and air-conditioning) systems similar to those on subways and trains, with one additional factor.

Buses are more likely to have windows that open. Windows, as well as open ceiling vents, allow fresh air to enter the vehicle. In addition, in a city system (as opposed to a long-distance ride), buses make frequent stops. Doing so allows outside air to flood in each time the doors open. In a case study of a bus in China, a passenger with the novel antibiotics was able to infect many other riders, including those seated up to seven rows away.

There seemed to be less risk of transmission, however, for people who were seated near windows and doors that could open. In addition to snagging window seats, bus riders should look for the same safety features they would on a subway. A mask requirement, good ventilation and adequate spacing between passengers. Limiting rides to short trips may also be helpful. Some bus companies have installed clear partitions between drivers and passengers.

Doing so might limit the spread of zithromax-carrying droplets from coughing, sneezing, breathing or speaking but is unlikely to prevent viral transmission via smaller airborne particles. Taxis, Ubers and Lyfts Before the zithromax, many people would not think twice about ordering a ride-share car or hailing a taxi. But now the idea of being in such an enclosed space with a stranger can seem like a life-and-death proposition. It is nearly impossible for drivers and passengers to remain six feet apart in a car, so transmission is definitely possible. An NEJM study in March reported on a Thai taxi driver who fell ill and tested positive for the antibiotics after driving some tourists who had been coughing but wearing a mask.

Reliable data on the frequency of buy antibiotics transmission in cars is lacking, however. Keeping the windows open and making sure the air system is set to take in outside air instead of recycling it should reduce the risk. Wearing a mask also probably helps, and ride-share companies Uber and Lyft both require drivers and passengers to do so. These companies have also stopped offering car pools (except in Uber’s case for people who work together), so passengers are only exposed to the driver and anyone in their own party. Some drivers have even installed a plastic shield between the front and back seats.

But as is the case with buses, these barriers would likely only protect against larger droplets, not aerosols. Shorter rides—especially those under roughly 15 minutes—pose a lower risk than long ones. And keeping conversation to a minimum could also reduce the danger because talking is known to release aerosols that can spread the zithromax. If the rate of community transmission in your region is low, chances are that taking the occasional taxi or ride-share car is not a huge risk—provided you wear a mask and keep the windows open as much as possible. Attaching the bill to the omnibus package means President Trump, who has declared climate change a hoax, will likely sign it into law, but Kigali could remain politically fraught territory for Biden next year.

Biden pledged where can i buy zithromax online on the campaign trail to “embrace” Kigali as part of his climate plan, and Doniger said he expects the administration to send it to the Senate early next year. More than a dozen Senate Republicans sent a letter to Trump in 2018 asking him to send Kigali for ratification, which suggests there could be 60 votes for the treaty, even with a closely divided Senate after the Georgia runoffs next month. Republicans, however, where can i buy zithromax online have long been skeptical of international climate treaties, even if the original Montreal Protocol was ratified without opposition at the recommendation of President Reagan.

Conservative groups like the Competitive Enterprise Institute have long argued where can i buy zithromax online a phase-down would be anti-consumer, designed for the benefit of the large companies like Honeywell International Inc. And Chemours Co. That manufacture where can i buy zithromax online HFC replacements.

Kennedy, for instance, said yesterday that the HFC phase-down would “create thousands of jobs, save billions of dollars where can i buy zithromax online and safeguard the environment.” Chemical manufacturers and environmental groups say there will be little cost for consumers over the course of the 15-year phase-down. Previous phaseouts of ozone-depleting chemicals under the Montreal Protocol suggest that replacements will be widely available in short order, Doniger said.

€œWe anticipate that like in the where can i buy zithromax online case of CFCs and HCFCs, everything will go faster than the original schedule,” he said. More energy Aside from HFCs, the end-of-year measure also includes multiple other provisions that would curb emissions and boost the development of cleaner power sources. Those include a modest tax title that would modify the phase-down agreement for the renewable production and investment tax credits. The PTC would get another year where can i buy zithromax online under the deal, while the ITC would get two more years.

Yes.” Reprinted from Climatewire with permission from E&E News.

E&E provides daily coverage of essential energy and environmental news at www.eenews.net.Editor’s Note (12/22/20).

Has seen since the zithromax began, the country faces a problematic holiday season.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses. There should be an interval of at least 12 hours between doses.

Patients deserve virtual care that better integrates, and doesn’t compete with, in-person careOak Street Health decision support system reduces readmissions by 26%How virtual care can be refined to reach those who need it mostThe U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency released a joint advisory this week warning organizations to protect themselves during holidays, including the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

The agencies said they have observed an increase in "highly impactful" attacks occurring when offices are normally closed. "The FBI and CISA do not currently have any specific threat reporting indicating a cyberattack will occur over the upcoming Labor Day holiday," the alert said. "Cyber criminals, however, may view holidays and weekends – especially holiday weekends – as attractive timeframes in which to target potential victims, including small and large businesses," it continued. WHY IT MATTERS The agencies noted that targeting organizations when most people are on vacation can provide bad actors with a head start for network exploitation and the propagation of ransomware. They cited recent incidents over holidays, including:A Mother's Day weekend deployment of Darkside ransomware against the IT network of a U.S.-based critical infrastructure entity in the Energy Sector.A Memorial Day weekend REvil ransomware attack on U.S.

And Australian meat production facilities.A Fourth of July attack by REvil on a U.S.-based critical infrastructure entity in the IT sector. Experts reiterated the importance of staying vigilant. "Given the troves of highly sensitive data that hospitals have access to, hospitals are arguably the crown jewel for bad actors," said Lisa Plaggemier, interim executive director of the National Cyber Security Alliance, in an email to Healthcare IT News. "Therefore, beyond just in engaging in their day-to-day cyber protocols, the health sector needs to be especially vigilant during periods when threat activity is likely to be particularly high – like during long weekends and around holidays," she said.

According to the alert, the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center has received 2,084 ransomware complaints, with over $16.8 million in losses, from January through July of this year. That's a 62% increase in reporting and 20% increase in reported losses compared to the same time frame in 2020. In addition to best practices such as offline backups, user training, incident response plans and multi-factor authentication, the FBI and CISA suggest preemptive "threat hunting" before attacks occur. "Threat actors can be present on a victim network long before they lock down a system, alerting the victim to the ransomware attack," said the alert.

"Threat hunting [involves] developing a baseline through a behavior-based analytics approach, evaluating data logs, and installing automated alerting systems." "Already this year we have seen major holiday-timed attacks breach critical infrastructure," said Plaggemier. "So it is imperative that healthcare organizations engage in the proactive and ongoing cyber best practices needed to keep their patient and employee data safe."THE LARGER TRENDThe FBI/CISA alert came alongside a recent warning from the FBI about Hive, a newly observed ransomware that was reportedly responsible for an attack on an Ohio health system this past month. President Joe Biden has also called for the general strengthening of critical infrastructure cybersecurity, given incidents like those outlined in the alert. "The cybersecurity threats posed to the systems that control and operate the critical infrastructure on which we all depend are among the most significant and growing issues confronting our nation," Biden wrote in a July memo.

ON THE RECORD "Hospitals and healthcare facilities host and serve a wide range of constituents both physically and virtually, making their information systems especially vulnerable to cyber-attacks, which are increasing at an alarming rate," said Bill Burns, vice president of vertical markets for health and life sciences at Cohesity Healthcare, in an email to Healthcare IT News."Organizations can best protect against the impact of these attacks by doing regular data backups and protecting their stored data via encryption, rendering it immutable to attack. In addition, an automated rapid data recovery capability will help the organization resume normal operations quickly, putting them in a position to reject any ransom demand," Burns added. Kjercich@himss.orgHealthcare IT News is a HIMSS Media publication.West Coast health system Adventist Health determined that guest WiFi is a mission-critical service for patients, families and staff, because many of the organization's facilities are in locations with limited cell service.THE PROBLEMStaff insisted they need to ensure everyone who steps through the doors – regardless of where they were on the premises – has simple, straightforward access to Adventist Health's WiFi 6 network. The bottom line was to have a faster, simpler and more painless way to connect."We would hear grumblings from some of our sites about connectivity, which is especially difficult for those who are at the hospital overnight," said Ed Vanderpool, senior IT manager at Adventist Health. "We wanted to provide them with a more enjoyable stay at our hospitals, and we were focused on adding value to their experience while they were at our facilities."PROPOSALAdventist Health was an early adopter of Cisco's WiFi 6 solutions, with a goal of providing a better patient and guest experience overall. But having a robust, fast wireless network is just the beginning.

The staff members realized they needed to further reduce friction for people looking to access the network."OpenRoaming technology promised to enable staff and visitors at our hospitals to connect seamlessly and securely to our WiFi network without needing to enter login credentials, thus reducing hurdles for clients seeking speedy Internet access," Vanderpool explained. "The spark for us to look at OpenRoaming technology is that most of our hospitals are in rural locations, meaning you don't have the best cell service.""Right when people walk in a facility, if their carrier is on our list, they get popped over to a nice, how to get zithromax in the us clean wireless infrastructure."Ed Vanderpool, Adventist HealthFurther, the provider organization could not expect the majority of patients and guests to be tech-savvy enough to troubleshoot if connecting to the network wasn't incredibly simple.OpenRoaming afforded staff the opportunity to implement a solution that requires no extra work. All patients, families and employees would see is powerful connectivity. All the infrastructure and connections being made on the back end are invisible to them.MEETING THE CHALLENGECisco helped Adventist Health complete the rollout of OpenRoaming service to all 24 of the health system's campuses throughout the West Coast and Hawaii."We then use Cisco DNA Spaces software as the engine that provides the OpenRoaming authentication," Vanderpool explained.

"With OpenRoaming, users now can instantly connect to our WiFi 6 network without needing to enter an email address or password. They are automatically segmented on the network, so they have access to our wireless network, but not any of our corporate functions, keeping things secure."OpenRoaming offered us seamless connectivity for clients, all while ensuring their privacy," he continued. "Right when people walk in a facility, if their carrier is on our list, they get popped over to a nice, clean wireless infrastructure. Clients don't know what is happening in the background.

They just see their strong connection and great cell reception."Adventist Health has seen an increase in connectivity not just from patients, families and staff, but from hundreds of traveling nurses and doctors, as well. Being in a rural area, the organization has many doctors and nurses who are there for a short time, and it's important they get great connectivity.Staff members use the Adventist Health app, which contains their unique IDs, to automatically connect to the WiFi 6 network via the OpenRoaming service on their arrival. This enables them to access necessary applications (like patient records) easily and securely.Security also is critical for Adventist Health when it comes to hospital WiFi."The bottom line is that clients must have online access when in our facilities. Not being able to connect is not an option," Vanderpool said.

"This means we must ensure the connection we offer is completely secure. OpenRoaming and our trusted partners offer the security we need to guarantee safety for our guests and their data."RESULTSSince implementing the new wireless technology, Adventist Health has had fewer calls coming in from staff about an inability to connect or problems with speed. In fact, the organization pretty much has seen calls like that disappear, Vanderpool reported."We also have seen a drop in incoming support tickets around WiFi connectivity, and our attach rate continues to rise, meaning clients and staff are staying online for longer periods of time," he said. "This technology also has opened the door to conversations about future projects we couldn't have considered before."Applications like wayfinding or pushing notifications about specials in the gift shop or the cafeteria were always very long-term projects, but now we have the infrastructure that can make those use cases a reality," he added.ADVICE FOR OTHERS"If you have the infrastructure set up – and most hospitals do – the process is straightforward," Vanderpool advised.

"It's adding an SSID, a little back-end work, security, etc. With Cisco DNA spaces, it was easy and simple for us to manage with little overhead. You can set it up and start monitoring right away."OpenRoaming is beneficial as new IT requests come in from your stakeholders," he concluded. "You don't have to bolt on an entirely new technology stack costing hundreds of thousands of dollars just to do one specific task.

OpenRoaming becomes a platform that serves as the baseline infrastructure to support a variety of use cases that are available now, but will also likely arise in the coming years."Twitter. @SiwickiHealthITEmail the writer.

Kat Jercich is senior editor of Healthcare IT News.Twitter. @kjercichEmail.

"The spark for us to look at OpenRoaming technology is that most of our hospitals are in rural locations, meaning you don't have the best cell service.""Right when people walk in a facility, if their carrier is on our list, they get popped over to a nice, clean wireless infrastructure."Ed Vanderpool, Adventist HealthFurther, the provider organization could not expect the majority of patients and guests to be tech-savvy enough to troubleshoot if connecting to the network wasn't incredibly simple.OpenRoaming afforded staff the opportunity to implement a solution that requires no extra work.
